Soundtrack Sunday 7

In Fall of 1998 my husband headed back to graduate school.  At the time, I was not happy about that decision (I am very thankful now that he went despite my protests).  I went back to work and was working on the opposite side of the city from where he was attending school.  To save money, we lived about 20 miles outside of the city and commuted in.  My work, his school, and oldest dd's school were all in the city, but we thought we were being smart with our money.  Dh would drop me off at work by 8:00 and then drop off dd at school, park, and be in his first class by 9:00. The commute in the morning was not that bad, it only took and hour (only...hahaha) to get to my office.  The commute on the way home though, was nothing short of agonizing.  We would sit in traffic for hours and hours sometimes.  If the commute was good, we could make it home in an hour and a half.  If conditions were not perfect though (which they rarely were), it took us 2 and 1/2 hours or more.  We hated the city that we lived in and we definitely hated that commute to get to the bigger city.  When we talk about that first year of graduate school (before we wised up and moved into the city) we wonder what we were thinking (seriously what WERE we thinking???)!  Really the only memories we have as a family from that year are from our time spent on the road and in traffic.  I really felt like if I didn't get out of that part of the rat race, I was going to explode!!  I remember listening to this song many times during those long commutes as I watched the "red ants marching into the night", dreaming of our green grass...that we would someday have.

New words and new weather...

We are having a short spell of AWESOME summer-like weather, so we will be outside enjoying it!!  But, I did want to post some more new words! :)

Cool--- :) She was holding a toy up showing it to me and said "coo" I *thought* she was saying cool, but wasn't sure.  Then, a few minutes later, we were outside watching the older kids on the slip-and-slide and the first time she saw her sister go down it she said, "coo" again and I knew it was definately COOL!!!  hahahahaha.

Thanks---she has been saying this one for a few days, but I wasn't sure what it was.  I thought maybe it was THIS.  But, then yesterday a couple times after I gave her something to eat she said "ta (pause) s" and I knew it was actually THANKS!!!  It is said that way everytime "ta (pause) s".

book---She was pointing at her favorite book that I read to her (a Sesame Street book of opposites) and said "book".

There was one more, but now I can't remember it and she is crying so will post later if I remember!!

Licorice Monster & New words...

When my mom comes into town, she usually brings with her a giant pack of Twizzlers.  She puts them down low enough that my kids can get in there and get some whenever they want.  Maybe she feels sorry for compared-to-others-sugar-deprived-kids and maybe she does it cause she can since she's the grandma (either way, I'm not going to stop it).  Well, baby girl discovered this stash one of the last days that Grandma was here and would take a handful at a time.  She would often bring a piece or two to her brother, but when I asked to have a piece she would shake her head no and say "uh-uh".  We kept finding pieces of licorice around the house with only very, very tip bitten off.

Some more new words...
toy- this was said when we were leaving nursery on Sunday

what is it---really sounds more like wu-usit.  She was holding up a advertisement that was inside of a
Backyardigans DVD and kept saying that over and over.

Baby-on Sunday while at church, I was talking to a mom that was holding her 6 mos. old baby girl.  Baby girl kept reaching out for this baby and trying to hug her.  When I said, "Do you want to give the baby loves?" She kept saying "baby" over and over while pointing at the baby.  When the baby left, my baby girl cried.  Later that night, I was editing pictures of her and she pointed to herself and said "baby".  Baby is said, bay (long pause) be.  She still has to really concentrate on that one! :)

I know there are more, but have a hard time recalling them when I have time to sit down and write :(

Email me....if you want

So, thanks to my older sister, the last few months I have discovered blogs of people we grew up with.  Some of them friends from highschool, some friends from "the hood" we grew up in, and even some family (insert SHOCK emoticon here).  I have also found blogs of people I know or know of from my area.  I don't usually comment on these blogs because I try not to use my whole name online.  Most of these people would look at the name ISLANDMOM and wonder who THAT was commenting on their blog.  I really do not want to scare people, so I just lurk.  I have often wished they had an EMAIL ME button on their blog, so I could drop them a note.  Soooooo, if you look over there on the left-hand side, you will now see an "email me" link.  You can email me....or not...but email me---if you want!

Garden Boxes

After being at Women's Conference and hearing over and over about the importance of teaching children to work, I decided that I absolutely HAD to have raised garden boxes this year for my kids to plant a garden in.  I knew Dad was coming for a visit and know that he really likes to have a list of things to work on while he is here.  He and ds worked really hard on the garden boxes and the area they would sit in, almost all day, everyday.  It was so heart-warming to watch the two of them work together.  I admire my dad's understanding of boys (I know he IS one...but you know what I mean) and how they work.  He really gets my son and that makes me so happy!  I think he gets my son better than I do most of the time!  The best part is that ds got to use power tools!!  What a great Pappy!  THANKS Dad!
