I promise, this is not as sappy as it starts...well, maybe a little, just stick with me.
When islanddad and I were dating, this song quickly became one of "our songs". I remember the day he proposed to me, it was February 12th...15 years ago (I know, I can hardly believe it either). I was attending Utah State at the time and had gone home for the weekend, as I had done every weekend since we started dating. I knew the proposal was coming and figured since he had a date planned and I was supposed to dress up, it was going to be that weekend.
We started our date with a matinee performance of the ballet Cinderella. After the ballet we went to eat (more on that later). While we were at the restaurant, he asked me what my favorite part of the ballet was and when I was finished telling him, he said, "Well, my favorite part was when she turned into a princess and then, he pulled out a tiny glass slipper with a ring tied with a ribbon inside (I still have the glass slipper) and asked me if I would be his princess forever. It was better than I had spent my whole life imagining it would be!!
But, here's the "rest of the story" as they say. As we were driving to the restaurant, I asked him where we were going and he said he didn't know. I thought he was joking and when I realized he wasn't, I thought, "Well, he must NOT be proposing to me tonight then, because SURELY he would have made a reservation and had this planned out!" I was just a little miffed as he handed me an "Entertainment" book and said to pick a restaurant. After we decided where we were going, this song came on the radio and it managed to settle me down, which is good since he DID indeed propose.
Fast-forward 15 years and he still likes to "fly by the seat of his pants", but it is something I have grown to appreciate. He has realized over the years that sometimes planning pays off and I have learned that sometimes things can just happen better than you could have ever planned. Last night, for Valentine's Day, we headed out for dinner, again without reservations or even a restaurant in mind. As we drove, he told me to choose where I wanted to go, so I chose one of our favorite locally owned spots. When we got inside, it was clear that they had decorated for the day with red and white tulips (my favorite) on the tables. They asked us if we had a reservation and we said no, we had figured we were early enough we would be okay and indeed, they were able to seat us right away. We ate dinner and visited and as we were getting ready to pay, the owner came in and announced that they had a quartet there to sing for our enjoyment. The quartet sang two songs in our area of the restaurant and it was WONDERFUL!!! When we got in the car and headed back home, this song came on the radio...no, I am not kidding! The night was perfect and better than we could have ever planned, really. Last night, this song came full-circle with us!
